It’s morning. Soft sunlight pries your reluctant eyes open as a calming realization falls over you like a bed sheet: It’s Saturday, and you have nowhere to be but home.
You shuffle into your cheerful kitchen and make a pot of coffee. Steaming cup in hand, you head back to your bedroom, walk into your side of the closet and put on your comfiest robe and slippers. Then you pick up a book from your bedside table and open the door to your private, en suite screened porch.
The crisp air awakens your senses as you enjoy solitude in your personal sanctuary. A bird chirps. A turtle splashes into the pond.
A relaxing hour later, the family gathers around the table in the bright breakfast room.
Breakfast clean-up is a breeze in the spacious kitchen, and the consensus is to spend the day outdoors. Between basketball on the parking pad, kayaking on the pond, exploring the wooded trails with the dog, and playing on the play set, there is something fun for everyone.
You also decide to mow the lawn, but it’s hardly a chore since the riding lawnmower is easy to drive in and out of the basement garage door.
Finally, with the satisfaction that only comes from time outdoors, the family heads inside to get cleaned up for company. Friends are coming over for a casual potluck during the big game later this afternoon.
You head into your bathroom and never have to side-step your spouse because there is more than enough space for both of you to get ready.
Down the hall, your teenage daughter has two closets and an en suite bathroom all her own, while the two boys share the bathroom adjacent their own bedrooms.
The delicious smell of chili simmering on the counter-top gas stove adds to the nostalgic, autumn ambiance. You walk into the huge pantry and grab some chips and dip to set out on the granite island. The doorbell rings.
“Oh, your home is beautiful!” friends exclaim as they walk into the grand foyer. You won’t be using the formal dining room today, but it adds both elegance and a homey quality to your home’s entry.
You lead your guests to the kitchen so everyone can grab a plate of food and a cold beverage, and then you head into the great room for the game. A see-through fireplace connects the foyer to the great room, which has a two-story vaulted ceiling and built-in entertainment center. There’s plenty of space for everyone to sit comfortably and see the TV.
After the game, you run upstairs to the attic and grab a game to play. Maybe next year you’ll finish this extra space and turn it into a game room.
In the meantime, the kids set up with popcorn and a movie while the adults take dessert and drinks out to the rustic, screened porch that overlooks the peaceful backyard and pond.
Many laughs later, you say goodbye and return to the comfort of your big bedroom, grateful for the perfect home to host such a wonderful day with family and friends.
